Producer – Champagne De Lozey
Champagne De Lozey is a family Champagne house with roots dating back to 1881. Four generations of the Cheurlin family have developed the estate, which today owns around 12 hectares of vineyards in the Côte des Bar, in the Aube department of Champagne. The estate is also HVE certified.
De Lozey focuses on traditional Champagne production while creating cuvées with distinctive personalities. The Rosé de Saignée is one of the house’s most expressive wines and uses Pinot Noir to create a powerful, deeply coloured rosé.
Champagne De Lozey Rosé de Saignée – 100% Pinot Noir
The Champagne De Lozey Rosé de Saignée is produced entirely from Pinot Noir using the traditional saignée method. Unlike many rosé Champagnes made by blending white and red wines, De Lozey allows the Pinot Noir juice to macerate directly with the grape skins.
The winery then drains the juice before the colour becomes too dark. As a result, the Champagne gains its naturally deep rosé colour together with intense red-fruit aromas and greater structure.
This method gives the wine a more vinous and powerful character while preserving the freshness expected from Champagne.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir gives the wine its structure, depth and rich fruit character. Moreover, skin contact during the saignée process brings extra colour and aromatic intensity.
Vinification & Maturation
De Lozey makes this Champagne through true maceration of Pinot Noir grapes, rather than simply blending a red wine into a white Champagne.
Maturation
- 100% Pinot Noir
- Traditional Rosé de Saignée method
- Pinot Noir skin maceration
- 3 years ageing in bottle on the lees
- 10 g/L dosage
- 12% ABV
The three years of lees maturation adds depth and helps create a fine mousse. Meanwhile, the 10 g/L dosage balances the wine’s acidity and powerful Pinot Noir character.
Tasting Notes
- Colour: Deep brick pink with warm red reflections
- Aroma: Strawberry, blueberry, quince and red berries with hints of liquorice and menthol
- Palate: Structured and powerful with intense fruit and fine bubbles
- Finish: Long, firm and refined with well-balanced acidity
The producer highlights blueberry and strawberry together with liquorice, menthol and quince. Moreover, the palate is notably structured and powerful for a rosé Champagne.
Guide Hachette – Remarkable Wine ⭐⭐
The Champagne De Lozey Rosé de Saignée received 2 Stars in the Guide Hachette des Vins 2024, which the guide classifies as a “Vin Remarquable” – Remarkable Wine.
Guide Hachette particularly praised its fine strawberry and grenadine aromas together with its harmonious, vinous and fresh palate. This recognition makes the Rosé de Saignée one of the standout cuvées in the De Lozey range.
Food Pairings
The Champagne De Lozey Rosé de Saignée pairs beautifully with salmon, risotto, shellfish, seafood, poultry, white meats and fruit-based desserts.
Moreover, its powerful Pinot Noir character means it can accompany more substantial dishes than many lighter rosé Champagnes. The producer even recommends it with both white and red meats.
Serving temperature: 5–10°C
Ageing Potential
3–5 years, according to Champagne De Lozey.
Its Pinot Noir structure and three years of lees maturation give the wine enough depth to develop further in bottle while retaining its rich fruit character.
Style and Character
The Champagne De Lozey Rosé de Saignée is a serious and characterful rosé Champagne. Moreover, the use of 100% Pinot Noir gives it considerably more structure than a delicate blended rosé.
The saignée method also creates deeper colour and greater fruit intensity. In addition, three years on the lees adds texture and complexity.
As a result, the wine combines strawberry, blueberry and red fruit with a structured palate, fine bubbles and excellent freshness.
Overall, Champagne De Lozey Rosé de Saignée is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a richer and more vinous style of rosé Champagne, backed by 2 Stars from Guide Hachette 2024.
