The Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Biele Zôe Cuvée highlights one of the most historic and distinctive red grapes of Friuli. In the 19th century, the name “Refosco” covered many different varieties. The wines were highly respected, so much so that even an unrelated Hungarian grape was renamed “Hungarian Refosco” to benefit from its prestige.
The name Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso appeared officially in 1863 during a grape exhibition in Udine. Before that event, the variety was often called Refoschino, a name still used in some Friulian towns today. Sadly, parasitic diseases that spread across Friuli in the mid-1800s wiped out many vineyards, including those of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso.
By the 1960s and 70s, the grape had almost vanished. It was considered difficult, with low yields and late ripening. Many growers abandoned it in favour of easier and more productive varieties. Today, however, the story is different. Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso—and Refosco Nostrano—are once again viewed as true treasures of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
