- TerroirThe name of our “Charmont” cuvée name is derived from that of our family residence. It is crafted from a blend of Pinot Noir grapes from the finest terroirs in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. The grapes come from plots located on the slopes of Villars Fontaine (50%), which are at the same latitude as Vosne-Romanée, from the lieu-dit Les Dames Huguettes (33%) overlooking Nuits-Saint-Georges, from plots located in Magny-les-Villiers and Villiers-la-Faye (15%), and from the hill of Vergy (2%) at an altitude of 450 m, facing our Château de Charmont winery. For the most part, these terroirs benefit from east-southeastern exposure at altitudes of 150 m above the Côte where they benefit from cool nights throughout the period of the ripening of the grapes, giving the wines that they yield all of their characteristic purity and freshness .
- Vinification and agingThe grapes from each plot are vinified and aged separately. The grapes are completely destemmed, with the exception of those from the hill of Vergy (2%) which are vinified using the entire bunches of grapes. Rapid fermentation under controlled temperatures not exceeding 29°C allow us to preserve all of the freshness characteristic of Hautes-Côtes de Nuits wines. Aging takes place partly in truncated wooden vats, partly in barrels (17% new oak) and lasts 9 months.
- Tasting notesGorgeous deep red in color. A nose bursting with aromas of red fruit (raspberry, redcurrant, cherry) features a wildish hint of brambles that is so typical of the Hautes-Côtes, along with deep, spicy nuances (cumin, thyme) and a hint of camphor. Starts out very pleasant on the palate, boasting remarkable balance and length, this wine is vibrant and fresh yet elegant. It finishes with a subtle hint of liquorice and refreshing salinity.

And what if the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits were the future of Burgundy… A few kilometers to the west of the Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits, with similar soil profiles, the vineyards of the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits flourish… This is the seat of the Delaunay family who settled in the Château de Charmont in l’Etang-Vergy in 1954. Here, the higher (+100 to 150 meters) altitudes of the vines could be a solution to climate change worth exploring with an offer of fresh, pure, elegant wines. Faithful to our history, we want to contribute to showcasing these terroirs of the future that further value our beautiful region – now famous for its UNESCO-recognized “climates” – just as the monks of the Citeaux Abbey did in the Middle Ages. The remarkable “Les Rouards” terroir is our first parcel selection wine in the Hautes-Côtes. Our ambition is to identify and vinify separately, year after year, a few of the outstanding Hautes-Côtes climats in order to showcase the unique qualities of these plots which, over time, could very well produce Burgundy’s future grand wines.
