Abruzzo – Montepulciano and Pecorino

Abruzzo sits on Italy’s Adriatic coast, between the Apennines and the sea. It is one of the country’s most reliable sources of honest, well-priced wine.

• Montepulciano d’Abruzzo – deep colour, soft tannin, dark plum and herb. Note this is the Montepulciano grape, not the Tuscan town of the same name
• Pecorino – a white grape rescued from near-extinction in the 1980s. Crisp, textured and citrus-driven, with real substance for a dry white

Pairings

Montepulciano is a natural with pizza, grilled sausage and hearty pasta. Pecorino has enough weight for grilled fish, seafood pasta and Maltese-style lampuki.

The name Pecorino comes from pecora, sheep – the grapes grew where flocks grazed, and reputedly the sheep ate them.
